Frequently Asked Questions

What will counseling look like?

Each client is different in their unique makeup and life experiences, therefore, “it depends,” is the answer. It depends on what you’re bringing into session and what you are like, but what will be consistent from person to person is the approach I take to meet you where you are and be in the mess with you while we sort out the exit together.

How will you help me?

I work to create an empowering environment where clients can explore existential questions, overcome challenges, and cultivate meaningful strategies for personal growth and well-being. I meet every client where they are, and we go at your pace. I provide support with evidence-based practices such as EMDR and Emotionally Focused Therapy. I hone in on the goals you present at intake and develop a treatment plan to meet those goals and we work from there.

How much counseling do I need?

Here’s that pesky “it depends.” Again, unique needs require unique tailoring for treatment. We work at your pace. Depending on readiness and the issues you are bringing in, we can work quickly on some things and may slow down for others. I also work within your budget . We are aiming for what you need, no more and no less.

What are sessions like?

I’m so glad you asked. Sessions with me are pretty laid back and conversational. I ask a lot of questions to explore the issues you are bringing to counseling. I like a collaborative effort with my clients so that we work together to bring healing in the counseling room. I like to joke around and you are free to be real and be yourself here. I aim to create a working environment to explore deep issues. Lastly, I personally feel honored to earn the right to hear your story, whatever you are comfortable sharing with me.

Are you also a photographer?

I am! I was a photographer before I became a therapist. The images on this website were taken when I was in California and Oregon in 2024 and are all mine. Now I do counseling for my job and photography is back to being a hobby. If you like my headshots, those are from Matt McElligott!
